The Greek Orthodox Experience - A Capella
Choir, directed by Constantin Zorbas, sung in Greek.
The music of the Orthodox Church is based upon an ancient
cycle of eight tones and the varied items on this disc have
been selected from a series of recordings, made to demonstrate
the richness of the tradition of Byzantine Chant, under
the direction of Constantin Zorbas, Professor of Byzantine
music and Head Chorister of Saint Panteleimon Acharnon Church
in Athens, Greece. The music, which is both monophonic and
unaccompanied, underlines and heightens the sacred texts,
and the basic atmosphere of each tone is maintained by an
underlying drone, called the "ison", which is
usually held by a number of skilled singers, because this
is not the easy task that it might appear at first hearing.
The notation, which governs the music, is in the form of
signs placed around the words and is thus quite different
from the Western European notation placed on one or two
staves. It is probable that, at some point in the past,
this notation arose from the improvised hand signals made
by the leader of the singers, and it gives to the whole
method of singing a great flexibility, subtlety and sensitivity
in relation to the text.
