ALL-NIGHT VIGIL FOR THE NATIVITY
Konevets Quartet Archpriest: Michael Fortounatto
The year 2000 marks the two thousand years of the Birth
of the Son of God. The present disc is dedicated to this
momentous event, particularly through the inclusion of a
number of items of festal hymnography from the liturgy of
the day. Here, throughout the various sections of the service,
the Gospel story, the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies,
the church's view of man's salvation - all are amply reflected
and given their musical interpretation. A liturgical shape
is given to the disc in the person of the celebrating priest
who articulates the prayers of the Vigil.
In the musical domain, in their choice of settings, the
four singers of the Konevets Quartet give an understanding
of the living tradition of the Russian Church, namely, of
its two current strands. The first, conservative strand
encompasses the chant, often very simple in melodic shape,
with its history going back to the 17th century and beyond,

recently harmonised for part-singing
(No. 3, 8, 11, 12, 16 and 19). The second strand is a hundred
years old (having survived the "lean years" of
Soviet repression against the Church), and has been termed
"the Moscow school of church singing" (No. 1,2,5,6,7,10,13,15
and 20). Its main character is seen in a double movement
of return to the ancient native sources of the Znamenny
chant and, at the same time, of a modem attempt at discovering
a truly Russian manner of polyphonic treatment of the ancient
material.
